What Is Your Skin Type?

Want to know your skin type?

Cleanse your face thoroughly with a mild cleanser and gently pat dry. Leave skin bare (and do not apply any additional moisturisers or serums). After 30 minutes, examine your cheeks, chin, nose and forehead for any shine. After another 30 minutes, evaluate whether your skin feels parched, especially if you smile or make any other facial expressions. If your skin feels tight, your skin is likely dry. If there is noticeable shine on your nose and forehead, your skin is mostly likely normal/combination. If there is shine on your cheeks in addition to your forehead and nose, you most likely have oily skin.

Dry Skin Characteristics

Your skin often feels tight, might be flaky, usually caused by environmental factors such as lifestyle & diet, hormonal changes, and climate. Dehydration can cause dry skin too so try increasing your daily water intake.

Caring for dry skin

Cleanse with a nourishing oil based cleanser, such as my Organic Gentle Cleansing Oil, or coconut oil and a face washer.

Moisturise morning & night with a rich serum and cream, such as my Illuminating Hydration serum and moisturiser.  You might be able to use a serum, facial oil or lighter moisturising cream on it's own in the mornings.

Applying moisturizers that are too thick or heavy can result in decreased natural oil production, resulting in even drier skin.  Finding the balance can be difficult.  I am always here of offer advice.

Combination/normal Skin Characteristics

Often called normal skin type, you will often have dry cheeks, with an oily or shiny forehead, nose and chin.

Caring for combination or normal skin

Cleanse with a plant based oil cleanser, such as my Organic Gentle Cleaning oil or fractionated coconut oil form your supermarket and a face washer

Moisturise once a day (usually night time) with Organic Refreshing Facial Oil or a mid weight moisturising lotion, such as my Illuminating hydration moisturiser.

Oily Skin Characteristics

You have oily shiny skin all over, often with clogged pores and enlarged pores that look similar to an orange skin. You might be more prone to acne and breakouts, and also less prone to wrinkles and premature aging.

Caring for oily skin

Cleanse with Organic Gentle Cleansing Oil and a face washer. Never use a gel or foaming cleanser as this will cause an over production of oil.  Coconut oil will be too 'heavy' for your skin.

Moisturise once a day (usually night time) with a 'dry' moisturising product, such as my Organic Healing Facial Oil or rosehip oil.

Using cleansers and treatments that are too harsh, even if they are recommended for excessive oiliness, may send the signal to your skin that more oil is actually needed.

Our skin is our largest organ.

The most important step in caring for our skin is understanding our specific skin type and how it adapts to certain circumstances or seasonality. Taking the time to learn your skin’s specific needs will help you to choose the right options that will balance skin resulting in a healthier, more radiant complexion.

You might be interested to know that Sensitive and Mature are not skin types!

Sensitive and Mature are are skin conditions.  Your skin might be easily sensitised or mature, but you will still fit into one of the above skin type categories.  If you have sensitive or mature skin I recommend you cleans with my Organic Gentle Cleansing Oil.  Sensitive skin conditions will love my Organic Nurturing Facial Oil, and mature skin conditions thrive on my Illuminating Hydration duo (serum and moisturiser).
